Growing up next door I have many fond memories of Miss Coughlin. She was always involved in mine and my sisters lives. Spending time with us and giving us newspaper clippings of events in our lives. She definetly touched the lives of many and I am glad we were part of her life.

Dear Family of Dorothy Coughlin,
I was so saddened to have just read online of Dorothy's passing. I got to know her very well when she lived at the Manor House in Batavia at the same time my mother, Florence Morse, lived there also. Dorothy was always a favorite of mine! We would have great conversations and both bemoaned the fact that grammar of the English language was taking such a "nose-dive" today. In fact, I found a pen to give her that said "Grammar Police"!
After my mother passed in 2015, I would still visit the Manor House (I live in Webster) and always looked forward to seeing and visiting with Dorothy. I truly missed her when she had to leave there.
You, her nieces and nephews, were so good to her, and I commend you highly for taking such good care of such a special lady. My sincerest sympathies go out to all of you. I'm sorry I didn't read the obituary until after the services for Dorothy were over, or I would have seen you in person to convey my condolences. Sincerely,
Joanne Morse

What an extraordinary woman she was! I was a student back in the early 70's at Elba and to this day, I remember her warm smile, her quiet mannerisms and her amazing intellect. I ran into her a few years ago at Ms. Batavia Diner and she still remembered me. I have a picture with her, taken that day that I shall treasure always. She was the person most responsible for instilling a life long love of reading and for that, I shall be forever grateful. What an angel God has gained and what a loss we have sustained.

Miss Coughlin was a gifted educator. She inspired my love of literature and made me a lifelong reader. I can't imagine who else could have brought so many classics to an understandable lesson for dull minded teenagers like myself. She taught us all how to read difficult literature from a different time.
A great teacher touches so many lives. I am lucky that mine was one of them.

I knew “Miss Coughlin” all of my life. Her memory for me is the epitome of Grace, Dignity, and always, always, always, A Lady. Without her as a teacher, as a consistent thread through my life, and one who worried about the tomboy in me, I would not have pursued a career such as I did. She was a Teacher with great respect from all the Boys and all the Girls. She and my Dad were great friends and cousins, and I have it on good authority that the Lady could give the boys a go all on her own! I have never forgotten her words. Each day as I rounded the corner down the short hall to her English class, invariably whistling a tune, she would say: "Whistling Girls and Cackling Hens Will Come to No Good End." I still whistle, and she is still in my head. Miss Coughlin was, and is most likely still the Favorite Teacher of many, many of us Elba kids. God Bless Miss Coughlin - my life and the life of many others - has been blessed by you.

I just got word that my 7th grade English teacher passed at age 92. She was a young and beautiful lady when I was in school, but she never married. I guess her students were her children.
I am glad I got to speak with her and thank her, not too long ago, for the gifts she gave me.
She was a real stickler for good grammar. We diagrammed hundreds of sentences in her class - until we solidified the basics of language construction. That knowledge has stood me well, over the years.
At the beginning of the school year, she gave us a list of 10 common errors for our compositions. Making one of these errors would cost us a letter grade on our composition.
I still often see the errors in online writing - and it makes my mind stutter.
I mentioned this list to a friend the other day, and he exclaimed, "You remember what you learned in 7th grade!"
"Better than yesterday."
If you had Miss Coughlin for a teacher, you'd understand. I still remember the list.
Miss Coughlin, we not only felt the insistence on excellence; we felt the love. Rest in peace, dear lady!

I am sorry to hear about the passing of Miss Dorothy Coughlin.
She was my favorite teacher at Elba Central School.
She set high standards for her students, and many of her
students became lawyers, school teachers etc. because of her.
She was a fine woman whose passing, leaves the world a little
sadder place for not having her here with us.

Please know Miss Coughlin was admired and loved by the people of Elba. She had influence on generations of students. I would like to share with you the Facebook page for the Elba Central School Alumni Reunion. If you look at it you will see dozens of comments by people who knew and loved her over the years. I just thought her family would like to see some of the wonderful things people had to say.

Miss Coughlin was my senior year English teacher. She made me part of the teacher that I was. Miss Coughlin was so kind, she would read any essay we wrote., She loved every student without being judgmental. She was constantly giggling. I loved riding my bicycle around Batavia and stopping by her house to say "Hello" while she was gardening. She was a favorite teacher. When I think back to ELBA; I think of Miss Coughlin. She will be missed. RIP. Suzanne (Tuggey, Houseknecht) Piccolo

To my friend, Dorothy: I first met you when I interviewed at Elba with Mr. Benton. You became my mentor, my confidante, my friend. Over the years, we shared many times together. We laughed together, shared good and bad things in our lives, prayed together, exercised together, and even cleaned church together. Even after I no longer lived nearby, we shared weekly phone conversations, until the time when that became impossible. It has been difficult to watch you fail and slip away, but your time of trial is over now. You lived a good life. Your reward will be great in Heaven. Rest in peace, dear friend! Lorraine
